Emil Hansson makes ‘valuable’ point after leaving Birmingham City

Birmingham City have shipped Swedish winger Emil Hansson to Dutch side Excelsior Rotterdam

Emil Hansson wants to become a ‘valuable’ player to Excelsior Rotterdam after closing the door on a difficult 18-month spell at Birmingham City.

Hansson joined Blues from Heracles as one of 17 new signings in the summer of 2024 but struggled for form and fitness in the club’s League One title-winning campaign.

Blues boss Chris Davies moved on from Hansson in the summer and the winger was sent to Blackpool on loan where he again featured sparingly in League One.

On Monday it was announced that Hansson had been recalled from Blackpool and joined Eredivisie side Excelsior on a permanent basis.

Back in the Netherlands, Hansson – whose contract with Excelsior lasts until the end of the season – is hoping to rediscover the qualities that saw Blues shell out on him.

He said: “I’m coming here with a lot of hunger. After a period with injuries, I see this as an opportunity to prove myself and be valuable again. Excelsior is a club with a clear style of play, and that suits me well.

“The most important thing is that we stay in the Eredivisie with Excelsior. We’re going to work hard together to achieve that.

“The stadium may not be the biggest, but it’s always full and there’s a great atmosphere. I’m looking forward to playing in front of the supporters.”
