“You think when you are walking around London at Christmas in normal times, you always see colleagues off out in their Christmas jumpers.”
He said: “A lot of people are planning smaller Christmas celebrations with just very close family so they are buying pyjamas.”
The site has seen sales of Christmas jumpers fall by 82 per cent this December when compared to the same period last year, while sales of Christmas pyjamas increased by 110 per cent and slippers by 55 per cent.
Sales of smart and glittery clothing has also fallen with festive merrymakers far less likely to be heading on glamorous nights out. Perfume sales have fallen by 51 per cent and smart shoes by 34 per cent.
Meanwhile, home owners are preparing for more time spent outdoors this Christmas with bans on meeting other households inside in place by stocking up on mulled wine.
Sales of the warming alcoholic drink at Waitrose have soared by 36 per cent.
Jamie Matthewson, drinks buying manager at the grocer, said: “Mulled wine is the ideal drink for al fresco meetings with friends this winter – the ready-made version we sell at Waitrose has been proving very popular as it’s such a simple and delicious way to feel festive in these unusual times.”
Home Christmas decorations like festive lights have proven popular, while figures from industry analysts Kantar, released earlier this week, suggested that mince pies have been another Christmas casualty, with sales in November down eight per cent on last year.
