There’s one thing on everyone’s minds after the team’s second successive triumph
England fans have taken to social media to all say the same thing after the Lionesses beat Spain on penalties to win Euro 2025. Mario Caldentey gave Spain the lead during normal play with a header, but it was England’s Alessia Russo that came back with a headed goal of her own to equalise in the second half.
The match ended 1-1 after extra time, as Bootle’s Alex Greenwood, Wirral’s Niamh Charles and Chloe Kelly all scored penalties in the shootout. Goalkeeper Hannah Hampton was the hero, saving two Spain penalties before Chloe Kelly scored the winning kick for England.
After the victory, fans all took to social media to share their elation. But there was one thing on everyone’s minds after the win – the prospect of a Bank Holiday to celebrate.
One tweet read: “Soooo Mr. Starmer, Bank Holiday tomorrow then mate?”
A second England fan said: “Can we have our Bank Holiday now?”
A third even tagged Sir Keir Starmer on X saying: “Bank Holiday now.”
After the victory, Sir Keir tweeted himself saying: “Champions! Congratulations @Lionesses — what a team. What a game. What drama. You dug deep when it mattered most and you’ve made the nation proud. History makers.”
In reply, many more fans responded asking for a day off. One response read: “We want a bank holiday @Keir_Starmer.”
Another reply read: “Well done England. Just waiting for the U-turn bank holiday.”
Despite no Bank Holiday being declared in 2022 when England’s women first won the Euros trophy, then-opposition leader Sir Keir Starmer had supported the idea at the time. describing it as ‘a proper day of celebration’.
When England’s women made it to the World Cup final in 2023, he said on X: “there should be a celebratory bank holiday if the Lionesses bring it home”.
However, the Prime Minister’s spokesman has told the BBC that there are ‘no plans’ for an additional Bank Holiday this Monday, indicating a change of stance.
