Entrepreneur breathes new life into old town Con Club

AN entrepreneur has revealed plans to revitalise a disused club in the town centre.

The former Conservative Club, at 4 Church Street, is part of the building housing the town’s post office and Royal Mail sorting office.

Now Chris Winstanley plans to reopen it as Malvern Radio, describing it as a space which businesses can hire to hold off-site meetings, run training sessions and entertain clients.

He is also planning to offer a programme of comedy and film at weekends, starting in the autumn.

Mr Winstanley said: “Many businesses lack the space in their own premises for critical business activities like training and company meetings. We offer a space that can be hired by the hour or day.”

The club’s facilities include two event rooms, broadband, full audio-visual set-up and a licensed bar. It can host events for up to 170 people.

Simon Smith, economic development manager at Malvern Hills District Council said: “We are delighted that the building is being put to good use in a way that will benefit businesses and the wider community in Malvern.”

Originally from Buckinghamshire, Mr Winstanley and his partner, Holly, Chris moved to the Malvern area a few years ago.

He said: “I was working in Birmingham and always having to attend meetings in the same generic hotels and business centres. I thought it’d be great to create an event space here in the hills, one that had more character to it.”

He originally considered a disused chapel in Cowleigh Road, before deciding it was too far from the town centre.

He said: “Then I was told about the old Con Club which had been empty for some years. The location was perfect for our needs.

“Over time, I hope we have companies from all over the country coming to the Malverns for their meetings and to enjoy the hills. We have already had enquiries from companies in London, Birmingham and Swindon – so we’re on the way to that goal.”
