Two of Cardiff’s top three schools for GCSE results are church schools in the latest data
GCSE results figures show how every maintained school in Cardiff ranks on grades awarded. Statistics shows which schools had the best results for A*-A, A*-C and overall pass rates A*-G at GCSE.
The latest GCSE results for Wales last week recorded Cardiff outperforming Wales on grades. The most recent Welsh Government figures comparing schools in the city are for the 2023-2024 academic year.
They rank the Church in Wales Bishop of Llandaff High as the best school in Cardiff for GCSE grades last year. Read the biggest stories in Wales first by signing up to our daily newsletter here
Confirmed data for each council area for last week’s 2025 GCSE results is yet to be published. But some schools published their own. Among them were Mary Immaculate High which reported a 4% rise for A*-A grades in 2025 compared to 2024.
The 2024 GCSE results are for the first year exams returned to “normal” pre-Covid conditions without teacher assessed grades or extra support for “lost learning”. That makes comparisons with previous years to 2020 problematic. The most useful comparable and similar year is 2019, the last pre-pandemic year until 2024 for exams.

Schools with the highest percentages of A*-As may not have he highest percentages of A*-C or overall pass rates A*-G. This may be an indication of a focus for top results rather than overall grades A* to G. The gold standard are A* to C grades.
Different areas also have very differing demographics. It is notable that three schools with the highest percentages of top grades, Bishop of Llandaff, Cardiff High and Corpus Christi are in the wealthier catchment areas of Cardiff and that two of the three are church schools.
