Numerous postboxes across Merseyside have been temporarily put out of action with their fronts removed and the structures wrapped in cling film.
Royal Mail has confirmed these units are being upgraded to a new “automated system” as part of a national rollout of 3,500 modernised postboxes.
The new design includes a dedicated drawer that allows customers to send and return small, pre-labelled parcels via a postbox for the first time.
These updated “postboxes of the future” will be equipped with solar panels to power their internal systems.
The modernised units include a built-in scanner to process parcel labels.
Despite the digital upgrades and parcel features, the new boxes will still include a traditional slot so residents can continue to post letters as normal.
A Woolton resident welcomed the move, saying the ability to drop off parcels at a postbox will help reduce “massive queues” inside the local Post Office branch.
Royal Mail said these upgrades are intended to complement its existing services, which include home collections, lockers, and customer service points.
