Exposing your home to burglars
Posting your holiday will let people know you’re not home and can use the opportunity to ransack your homes for valuables.
Actress Hilary Duff was a victim of such burglaries while she was on vacation in Canada.
The burglars carted away her expensive jewelry, and despite having a security system, it didn’t alert the police.
While it isn’t clear if she shared information about her trip, her status as a celebrity probably made it easier for the information to get leaked.
But don’t think that you won’t be a victim to this crime just because you’re not famous – it can happen to anyone when you’re sharing that you’re not home on social media.
Safety reasons
Posting your hotel on social media can attract all sorts of people and even put you in harm’s way, you’re revealing your location to a bunch of people you might not even know.
You could be targeted by stalkers, or you could unknowingly invite burglars or robbers to your hotel room.
A perfect example of this is the famous robbery of Kim Kardashian in 2016.
The reality TV star was attacked after she revealed her hotel location inadvertently. The robbers took her jewelry and cash, leaving her scarred by the memories.
Avoiding stalking and robbers on your Christmas trip
Experts recommend only sharing information about your trip after you return from it.
While it may seem insignificant, sharing harmless details about your trips could give burglars the information they need.
Don’t comment about your arrival dates, how long you will travel, or when you will leave.
Starting when you’re set to travel online or where you will be going will attract burglars or thieves, or even stalkers.
It’s easier to collect information about you than you’d like to think and it’s not hard for this information to fall into the wrong hands.
When taking pictures on holiday, do not add locations or visible signs that can show where you are. If you have such photos, only post them after you return – a few extra days for the sake of safety is worth waiting for.
