North Tyneside Council has laid out a series of road works, diversions, and temporary road closures, set to start in September.
Residents of Whitley Bay have been informed about a series of extensive roadworks and temporary closures scheduled to begin in early September.
The works will be conducted over three phases, beginning with Northern Gas work on the A193 Park Avenue. The maintenance will see gas pipes replaced with more durable materials. From September 1, temporary traffic lights will be in place to deal with traffic following the closure of the southbound lane of Park Avenue from the York Road Junction of Whitley Bay.
The local authority has warned that the two bus stops located on Park Avenue, outside the shopping centre, will be suspended for the duration of the works. According to the council’s letters to residents: “Nexus will direct customers to alternative stops located on Whitley Road and Park View.”
The second phase of works will see traffic signal upgrades across the following four junctions:
- The Marden Road/Whitley Road junction
- The Park Avenue/Whitley Road junction
- The North Parade/Whiteley Road junction
- The York Road/Park View junction
Temporary signals and pedestrian crossing will be in place and remotely monitored to cope with traffic, particularly at peak times. A short section of Laburnum Avenue will operate as a one way street with access onto the avenue from Whitley Road. However access from Laburnum to Whitley Road will not be possible.
The third phase will see road resurfacing on Marden Road, Whitley Road, and Park Avenue. This will incur temporary road closures during the hours of 6.30pm and midnight. Traffic diversions will be in place.
According to a North Tyneside letter to residents, seen by the local democracy reporting service, the above measures will “minimise disruption” during peak travel times.
The letter concludes: “These works have been carefully coordinated with Northern Gas Networks to minimise disruption and ensure all necessary improvements are completed efficiently. While some inconvenience is unavoidable, l will do everything we can to reduce disturbance. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.”
Chris Trevena, site manager at Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these essential works. However, it’s vital we complete them to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Whitley Bay.”
