It’s a global fascination
Torbay families were among the first to ride the bay’s world-famous Train of Lights in the run-up to Christmas.
The train, which runs on the Dartmouth Steam Railway’s line between Paignton and Kingswear, is festooned with strings of coloured lights. Passengers can also enjoy Christmas scenes alongside the tracks.
The service has been featured in newspapers, online videos and TV shows around the world, with one news outlet in the USA describing it as ‘awesome’.
For the sixth year in a row hundreds of people from Torbay ’s fostering, special guardians and disability families enjoyed a trip on the train, along with a group of care-experienced young people.
More than 800 tickets were provided, bringing the total provided by the railway since 2019 to more than 4,000.
The event was organised by Torbay Council ’s corporate parent champions and children’s services as one of a number of events that the council and its corporate fostering partners offer.
This year for the first time Sound Communities joined in the fun and recorded interviews with passengers for a forthcoming podcast. Also at the event were representatives from Fostering South West, along with ‘Mood Bears’ who are their official mascots.
VIPs at the event included the council leader, cabinet members and councillors, along with the MPs for Torbay and South Devon. Dart Netball Club and Torbay Council staff donated more than 600 packets of crayons for the children at the event.
The Train of Lights runs until December 30.
