FedEx opens new facility and debuts pallet dimensioning technology in Australia

FedEx Australia has opened a 2,400m2 new state-of-the-art sortation and distribution facility in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales that will support SMEs looking to expand their domestic and international e-commerce reach.

The new facility is equipped with advanced material handling and sortation technology to safely and efficiently sort up to 1,300 parcels per hour. Strategically located near the highway, the new facility provides easy access for express pick up and delivery services across Coffs Harbour. It also serves as a domestic and international collection point, providing seamless end-to-end transportation services for local importers and exporters.

“This advanced facility represents a significant milestone in our commitment to enhancing our value proposition in Australia and creating greater access for customers while supporting the ongoing economic growth of regions like Coffs Harbour,” said Peter Langley, vice president, FedEx Australasia. “By investing in infrastructure enhancements and service improvements in Australia, we enable faster and more efficient freight movement across the country. This expansion will not only strengthen our regional network and overall service offerings, but it also empowers local businesses to retain or even gain market share by providing the best possible last-mile delivery experience for their customers.”

Technology debut

FedEx’s newly built Adelaide facility in South Australia is the first in the country to implement the company’s Dynamic Drive-through Pallet (DTP) Dimensioning Systems in its operations. This technology is set to transform the pallet dimensioning process and is the first time the technology has been used in FedEx’s global network outside of the US.

By leveraging laser dimensioning technology and RFID forklift tagging, the new DTP Dimensioning Systems automate and enhance the dimensioning process for palletized freight. As pallets pass through, precise measurements of dimensions and weight are captured in real time that are certified legal for trade. This breakthrough eliminates the need for manual measurement and stop-start activity and significantly reduces processing times while boosting productivity.

Since its implementation, DTP has enabled more than twice the handling speed of 400 bulk shipments per hour per device, compared to the previous rate of 150-200 bulk shipments per hour per device. This increase in efficiency in processing capacity within existing facilities helps accelerate delivery times for customers, promoting swifter and more reliable service.

“At FedEx, we are dedicated to embracing innovations that elevate our operational capabilities and service offerings,” said Langley. “The introduction of Dynamic Drive-through Pallet Dimensioning Systems in our Australian operations drives greater efficiency and enhances the customer experience. We will continue innovating to further optimize our processes, creating greater value for our business and our customers.”
