Felix of Denmark poses with his model brother Prince Nikolai

They divorced when he was just two years old, but Prince Joachim of Denmark and his ex-wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, put on a united front to celebrate son Prince Felix’s 18th birthday today.

The parents marked the milestone occasion alongside their eldest son Prince Nikolai, 20, and Joachim’s current wife Princess Marie and their two children Prince Henrik, 11, and Princess Athena, eight.

Sharing intimate family photographs to Instagram this afternoon, the group are seen hugging one another in a group snap while at the Danish royals’ summer residence, Chateau de Cayx, in France. 

Felix, who is eighth in the line to the Danish throne, and the grandson of Queen Margrethe, 80, celebrated his birthday ‘privately with his friends and family’, according to a statement made by the palace.

In another snap, Felix is joined by his three siblings, surrounded by danish flags and a birthday cake. 

A third shows the teenager, dressed in a smart light blue shirt, standing next to his eldest brother Prince Nikolai, who has worked as a model for Dior and Burberry before attending business school.

He’s walked alongside Cara Delevingne on the catwalk and strutted his stuff before a front row that included Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Michelle Dockery, Naomi Watts, Zendaya, and Idris Elba.

The collection of four birthday images was shared to Instagram with a caption, which, roughly translated into English, read: ‘Today it is 18 years since His Highness Prince Felix was born at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen.

‘From this morning, the day has been celebrated at the Château de Cayx in France,’ which is located in Cahors.

The town is a favourite destination for the Danish royals, who love to retreat to the family’s beautiful manor house.

Queen Margrethe and her husband French-born Prince Henrik, who died in 2018, bought the estate in 1974 and export wine from the vineyards throughout the world. 

Felix’s parents Prince Joachim of Denmark and his ex-wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg divorced when he was just two years old in 2004 after 10 years together – they were Denmark’s first royal split in nearly 160 years.

Prince Joachim, the second son of Margrethe and Prince Consort Henrik, is himself sixth in line to the throne after his elder brother Crown Prince Frederik and his four children with Australian-born Crown Princess Mary.

He has since remarried Paris-born Marie Cavallier, now Princess Marie and the couple have two children together Prince Henrik, 11, and Princess Athena, eight. 

Hong Kong-born Alexandra, who lost her title of Princess after the divorce also remarried Martin Jørgensen, but that union ended in 2015.

Felix is studying social sciences at the secondary school Gammel Hellerup Gymnasium in Copenhagen.
