Fight to end ‘ridiculous’ Post Office which doesn’t have a Post Office

Somerset MP Gideon Amos is taking his campaign for the return of a Post Office in Wellington to Parliament this week. More than 200 people have so far signed a petition he launched earlier this month.

And now Mr Amos has secured a House of Commons debate on Post Offices in the House of Commons this Thursday. The town has been without a Post Office since 2019 when the One Stop convenience store in High Street, which housed it, closed. The nearest facility is now at Rockwell Green.

Mr Amos launched his petition after officially opening Wellington’s permanent Banking Hub in Fore Street which features the Post Office logo on its signage but does not offer postal services.

He said: “There’s clearly a great deal of support for my campaign and I’m delighted to have secured a debate in Parliament which will enable me to raise this important issue on the national stage.

“It remains somewhat ridiculous to have a building run by the Post Office – the Banking Hub – which doesn’t provide a Post Office. For a town of 15,000-plus people to be without its own Post Office just doesn’t make sense and this is one of my top priorities in 2025.

“The failure of the government-backed Banking Hub scheme to also provide Post Office services – even though some are run by the Post Office – is a major missed opportunity for communities up and down the country.”

“One way or another, having got a Banking Hub, we now need to get a Post Office and keep building a better future for Wellington town centre.”
