Final chance to support Dumfries and Galloway Standard’s 2021 Christmas Toy Appeal

Today is the last chance to hand in a toy or chocolate treat at one of the five collection points in Dumfries for the Standard’s Christmas Toy Appeal.

Our public appeal ends today to give us time to sort out the hundreds of toys which have been donated during the past five weeks so they can go out to the various agencies we work with, and onto the underprivileged children living in poverty and struggling families right on our doorsteps in Dumfriesshire.

The demand for this appeal has been immense and, while we are grateful to everyone who has gifted a toy or chocolate treat so far, we are asking our readers to dig deep and make this last day really count so that we can meet the lists.

This week we were given a fantastic boost from the amazing staff at the Royal Mail Dumfries delivery office who have donated a fantastic amount of toys.

Organisers Jamie Hughes, Tony Trainor and Ross Corbett have worked throughout the year to help the appeal through a book stall they host in the delivery office for the public.

Donations from this and from staff at the delivery office raised £840 which has been spent on toys.

It was boosted by donations of toys from the posties too.

Look out for the Standard Toy Appeal poster at our five collection points in Dumfries.

Jamie, Tony and Ross would like to thank Royal Mail and staff at Argos and Toy Town in Dumfries for all their support for their delivery office’s contribution to the appeal this year.

If you’d like to help today, we are still looking for toys and gifts for babies, boys aged 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10, girls aged 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10, gift sets for teenagers and selection boxes or tubes of sweets.

Our collection points are: Tesco Extra at Cuckoo Bridge; Morrisons, Dumfries; Tesco Peel Centre, Dumfries; and the Dumfries Nationwide branch (open today from 9am to 4.30pm).

There is also a collection point in Marks and Spencer in Dumfries at the Christmas tree near the coffee shop which has our special named red tags on.

Please pick one from the branches, buy an age appropriate gift for the child named on it and leave in the baskets.

If you can help children experience part of the magic of Christmas – please do so today.

In keeping with health and safety measures it is essential this year to make sure:

• No secondhand toys.

• Toys must be new, unused and sealed, boxed or tagged.

• Please do not wrap toys in Christmas paper.

Supporters may want to make a cash donation rather than have to shop for a toy and you can to this directly into our bank account at the Bank of Scotland in Dumfries either in branch or online using BACS.

You just need to know that the Standard Toy Appeal account number is 10856666 and the sort code is 80-22-60.

Our offices in Park Lane are closed, so do not send cash or donations there.
