The inspections, which will continue until November 10, are designed to ensure businesses follow strict safety rules around the sale and storage of fireworks.
Fireworks must be kept securely away from the public and stored in locked cabinets that customers cannot open.
Retailers are also prohibited from allowing customers to handle fireworks on display.
Inspectors will be checking that businesses only store the types and quantities of fireworks they are licensed for, and that they are being sold appropriately.
Staff will also be asked questions about their sales procedures and safety knowledge.
A GMFRS spokesperson said the checks aim to help keep people safe during Halloween and Bonfire Night celebrations.
The service is reminding residents hosting their own displays to follow the firework code and to “be safe, not sorry.”
People are advised to keep fireworks in a closed metal box and to light them one at a time. Fireworks should never be thrown, and sparklers should be lit individually while wearing gloves.
The service also recommends keeping a bucket of cold water nearby in case of emergencies.
