First picture of cyclist who died after crashing bike as police launch appeal

Police are appealing for any witnesses to David MacKenzie’s crash.

A man who tragically died after crashing his bike near Inverness has been named by police.

David MacKenzie, 72, was cycling along the B9006 on Saturday, August 30, when he came off his pedal bike at the village of Westhill at around 8.45am.

He was rushed to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, where he died a short time later.

The road was closed by police and reopened around 11.30am.

Sergeant Neil MacDonald said: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of Mr MacKenzie at this difficult time.

“Enquiries are ongoing and we are appealing to any witnesses to contact us.

“We would also ask anyone with dash-cam footage of the area at the time to get in touch.”

David’s family have asked that their privacy is respected.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting incident number 0955 of Saturday, 30 August, 2025.
