HMS Agamemnon’s Commanding Officer Commander David Crosby then presented the Secretary of State for Defence, the Chief of Defence Nuclear, the First Sea Lord
and the CEO of BAE Systems.
The King read the Commissioning Warrant to mark the submarine entering operational service and recognise the work of those who built it and staff and support it.
The Commissioning Ceremony concluded with the raising of a White Ensign, the official standard of the Royal Navy.
After the ceremony, His Majesty had the opportunity to meet BAE employees involved in the construction of HMS Agamemnon as well as the boat’s serving personnel and their families.
The King then visited The Bridge careers hub which opened as part of plans to help regenerate Barrow’s town centre, which provides education and recruitment services connecting talent with opportunities.
His Majesty met representatives from charities and community groups supported by the £5 million Team Barrow Social Impact Fund.
Earlier this year, Team Barrow – a partnership between the government, BAE systems and the Westmorland and Furness Council – published its 10-year plan to improve public services and the local area in order to support Barrow’s growth as a long-term base for the UK’s submarine programme.
This includes investment to revitalise Portland Walk as part of the town centre.
At The Bridge Centre, The King met members of the community using the centre’s facilities, including those attending a workshop hosted by The King’s Trust, and local business representatives.
At Coffee D’Ash, a café which has recently opened on Portland Walk thanks to support from Team Barrow, The King was set to meet businesses and organisations supported by the first year of grants from the Social Impact Fund, which aims to bolster not-for-profit organisations.
The organisations will include:
• Love Barrow Families
• Self-Harm Awareness for All
• Signal Film and Media
• A Stitch Different
• Furness Education and Skills Partnership
• Women’s Community Matters
• MIND in Furness
• Cumbria Addictions Advice and Solutions
• Barrow and District Disability Association
