Just because the symbols are the Union Flag or the Cross of St George doesn’t negate it being vandalism. If someone attacked another person with a baseball bat that had a flag painted on it, that would still be assault. The symbol doesn’t negate the criminality of the action.
Furthermore, we can already see that allowing the activities of these flag vandals to persist leads to even more vandalism. There have been incidents of racist graffiti reported in the Press since this flag campaign began.
Since this is about vandalism, I wonder if the council cannot recoup the £250,000 that it will cost to remove these flags, from the group that insists on vandalising lampposts with them?
Why should we all have to pay for the selfish behaviour of a few vandals, especially during a cost of living crisis? Who are they to decide that we should all lose the equivalent of 12,000 hours of care for older and disabled residents, just so they can deface public lampposts?
If our council tax goes up next year, we’ll know who is responsible.
Lastly, it seems to me that this type of vandalism is about insecurity, and that is nothing to celebrate. The well-adjusted British folks I know are secure enough in our cultural identity, not to have to resort to vandalism to feel happily British.

Standing with postmasters
As a former York sub Post Mistress, my sympathies go out to anyone still owning and running a sub Post Office and who now face a new competitor in the form of Royal Mail Collect + Convenience Stores. I understand there will be 8,000 of them.
Royal Mail and the Post Office were once part of the same family (together with Parcelforce) many years ago but now it seems the Royal Mail will be a direct threat to traditional Post Office revenue and somehow, as we know from the past, nothing ever seems to replace lost revenue.
Recent publicity mentioned possible prescription work. In the late 1990s when we were first told about Horizon we were told that in addition to streamlining our daily work it would also mean extra business. Work for local councils was mentioned but it never happened and we all know what has happened with Horizon!
I wish all remaining Postmasters good luck as they deal with yet another loss of income.

Labour Government priorities are all wrong
The Labour Government are to introduce digital ID and online booking appointments with GPs.
This will NOT help the many thousands who do not have a computer, or mobile ‘phone, or smart ‘phone, or laptop, or iPad or are not literal with IT technology.
The first will not deter illegal immigrants because the people who hire and pay low wages to “illegals” will never bother to ask for legal or any type of ID.
The second will cost a huge amount of money, as will the first, and most folk want an “eyeball to eyeball” talk with their doctor and/or their surgery. Yet again, this Labour Government have got their priorities all wrong.
