Four jobs you need to do to your lawn before the end of October

As October wanes and November ushers in chillier weather alongside shorter days, there are critical lawn care jobs to complete in preparation for the season ahead.

Whilst lawn maintenance might not be at the forefront of a homeowner’s mind as winter looms, it is crucial not to neglect your garden during the frosty months.

Steve Taylor, known as the Grass Guru at GreenThumb, the UK’s premier lawn care company, stresses the significance of sustaining garden upkeep through the colder season to guarantee your lawn bursts back to life in springtime.

Sharing his expertise, he suggests: “While our lawns may be dormant, a little care can go a long way. Taking a few proactive steps now will set the stage for a healthy lawn when warmer weather arrives.”

Here are Steve’s top tips for autumn lawn care:

Declutter your garden

One of Steve’s primary pieces of advice involves removing garden furnishings and other items from your lawn, highlighting that if such objects are abandoned outdoors and left idle, they may cause dead spots, subsequently leading to sparse and weak grass by the time spring flourishes.

Clear away fallen leaves

Steve cautions: “Fallen leaves can block sunlight and air, both of which are essential for your grass’ survival. They can also create damp conditions on your lawn, which can foster fungal growth so possibly disease along with some moss growth. Be sure to rake up any fallen leaves to protect your lawn’s health.”

Mulch your garden

After you’ve cleared the leaves, Steve explains they can be repurposed as an effective mulch. He said: “Shredded leaves not only prevent soil erosion but also act as a barrier against weeds, making it a simple and effective way to enhance your garden’s health this autumn.”

Keep vigilant for any trouble with your turf

Emphasising vigilance, Steve underscored the need to watch for signs of distress in your grass. During the cooler months, issues such as snow mould and moss growth can manifest, hence why it’s essential to address potential concerns promptly.

Further advising homeowners, he said: “If you do spot any signs of distress on your lawn, I’d always recommend calling a lawn care professional for their advice. Remember a good lawn is always a healthy lawn so endeavour to keep all feeding programmes up to date too.”

Autumn/winter long treatment

And when it comes to taking care of your lawn throughout the Autumn and Winter months, Steve said: “If you really want to look after your lawn this winter, I’d advise GreenThumb’s autumn/winter long treatment.”

He pointed out that unlike typical treatments aimed at spurring growth, this specialised one fortifies the grass against winter conditions, helping manage moss and setting up your lawn to meet the challenges of winter.

Concluding his advice, Steve said: “A little attention now can lead to a beautiful lawn in the spring. Stay proactive, and your grass will thank you when the sun shines again.”
