Four new coronavirus cases have been confirmed in Greater Manchester today including the first three in Manchester itself, taking the total in the region to 18.
The Manchester Evening News understands that one of the confirmed cases is a Royal Mail worker.
The Department of Health today said that as of 7am this morning the number of confirmed cases of the virus across the UK, also known as Covid-19, had risen to 206.
And four of the new cases today are in Greater Manchester it has been confirmed, taking the total in the region to 18.
That includes the first three cases in the city of Manchester.
The government list the number of cases in the Manchester City council area as five.
However two of those are previous cases and relate to Stockport residents being treated in Manchester the Manchester Evening News has been told.
However the city authority has seen what it is classing as its first three cases a spokesman confirmed tonight.
No more details about the other cases are known at this stage.
Oldham Council also confirmed they had one new case in the borough, their second.
Public Health England initially said there was one new case in Bury taking the total there to four – but later said it was a ‘glitch’ on their website.
The director of Public Health for Manchester David Regan said: “I’d like to reassure people that the risk to the general public remains low and all partners are working together to do everything we can to reduce and slow the virus spreading and ensure people are protected.
“Good hygiene is the best prevention and there are some simple steps you can take to protect you and your family by washing your hands regularly and thoroughly and if you cough, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue.

“If you have recently been to one of the affected countries and are feeling unwell, you should phone the NHS’s 111 helpline for further advice straight away – please don’t go to your doctor.
“There’s lots of advice on how people can protect themselves online at www.nhs.uk “
In a statement on Twitter Oldham Council said tonight: “A second case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Oldham.
“Risk to the public in Oldham remains low.
“Robust plans are in place to stop the virus spreading.
“Stay calm and wash your hands regularly.”
The total number of confirmed cases in Bolton (one), Trafford (four) and Wigan (three) remains unchanged.
In an update earlier this afternoon the Department for Health said: “As of 7am 7 March 2020, a total of 21,460 people have been tested: 21,254 negative. 206 positive.
“Two patients who tested positive for coronavirus have sadly died.”
