Freya Skene: Birthday party in memory of Dundee girl who died in waterfall to raise funds for charity

The mother of a Dundee girl who died in a Perthshire waterfall accident says she wants her daughter’s memory to help other families.

Freya Skene, seven, lost her life after getting into difficulty in the River Braan at Ossian’s Cave in Dunkeld on the evening of July 6, 2020.

A festival, organised by her mum Brooke Reid, will take place this weekend to celebrate what would have been her 11th birthday.

She said: “She was so creative in herself. If I was to do her face paint she would copy it onto me.

“She always wanted to be involved in things that create change.

“We did protests and things like that. She was just a good soul.”

In the months after Freya died, charity Freya’s Wish was set up in her name to help other families make memories.

This weekend is the charity’s most important event of the year, Frey-stival, a family fun day which will be held near Errol.

“It’s great for the parents and the kids because there’s live music, a circus,” said Brooke’s close friend Libby Hutchison.

“There’s something for everyone, which is good.”

All money raised this weekend will help fund future events.

The charity’s currently in the process of renovating an old mini bus to help families enjoy a weekend away.

Brooke said: “If Freya was still here, I’d be doing this.

“I always gave her the best for her birthdays, but we were always about memories rather than gifts.

“I think she would be super proud. She deserves to be remembered.”
