Here are all eight dates to note – with the UK Government confirming that there will be substitute days over both the 2026 and 2027 festive periods
With the final bank holidays of 2025 coming up, households will already be looking ahead to their days off next year as they plan 2026. And there are some changes coming up that are worth noting when planning holidays.
The next bank holiday in England and Wales is, of course, Christmas Day on Thursday December 25, with the last bank holiday of the year following hot on its heels on Boxing Day. 2026 will kick off with its first bank holiday on Thursday, January 1 – and then there’s not another until Easter.
Bank holidays on Friday, April 3 and Monday, April 6 will spell a long weekend for many as Good Friday and Easter Monday are celebrated. Less than a month later, there’s the Early May Bank Holiday on May 4, and May is closed off by the Spring bank holiday on May 25.
The last bank holiday before Christmas 2026 will be the Summer bank holiday on Monday, August 31. But it’s when it comes to the festive period that there will be some changes, due to the days on which the holidays fall.
Christmas Day falls on a Friday in 2026 – and this means that Boxing Day will be on a Saturday. Because of this, the UK Government has confirmed that a substitute bank holiday will take place on Monday, December 28 – meaning a four-day weekend for lots of households across England and Wales.

And it will be a short week too, with New Year’s Day falling on a Friday as the first bank holiday of 2027. This year, both Christmas Day and Boxing Day bank holidays will take place on substitute days due to falling on a Saturday and Sunday respectively.
Monday, December 27 and Tuesday, December 28 will therefore be bank holidays in 2027. And New Year’s Day 2028 will also have its own substitute day given that it falls on a Saturday, with the bank holiday taking place on Monday, January 3 instead.
Of course, people with certain jobs, such as hospitality or the emergency services, may have to work these bank holidays. Employment legislation states that bank or public holidays do not have to be given as paid leave.
An employer can choose to include bank holidays as part of a worker’s statutory annual leave. However, some employers choose to give extra pay for bank holiday working, and/or to give staff who work them a lieu day so they still get the extra day off.
