Bank branches are a crucial lifeline for many communities, especially in rural areas, and offer key services to the elderly in urban settings. Despite the introduction of shared banking hubs and Post Office bank services, it’s clear that by 2025, UK high streets will have far fewer bank branches due to another round of closures.
NatWest became the latest bank to announce permanent branch closures on Friday, with plans to close 53 branches this year. This follows announcements from Halifax, Lloyds, and Bank of Scotland, each detailing their own bank branch closure strategies for 2025.
If your local bank branch is set to close, you may still be able to perform basic services at your local Post Office. For instance, Post Offices allow you to deposit cash and cheques, make withdrawals, and even check your bank balance, reports the Express.

Santander
Santander is currently not planning any permanent branch closures, although it is transitioning to ‘counter-free services’ in five branches. The bank stated: “We have no planned permanent branch closures currently. We’re offering a counter-free service in some of our branches from July 2024 to January 2025. These branches are Braintree, Bromsgrove, Edgware Station Road, Streatham, and Stirling. Our opening hours won’t change, and our staff will be on hand to help you during your branch visit.”
There have been recent concerns that Santander could completely exit the UK market following the car finance misselling scandal.
However, Ana Botin, the executive chairman, has reaffirmed her commitment to the UK amidst reports in the Financial Times suggesting that Santander is reassessing its operations in the country. Speaking at a panel during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, she declared: “We love the UK” and assured that “It is a core market and will remain a core market for Santander.”
