Broughton-in-Furness lost its Post Office in June last year before it found a new home inside the town’s Tourist Information Centre (TIC) thanks to community support.
Following the original closure, the corresponding post box was sealed with intentions to place a new one on Station Road.
However, locals have raised issues about the safety of the spot with Broughton Community Services CIC and MP Michelle Scrogham campaigning for it to be moved to the TIC at The Square so that it can be ‘more visible and convenient’.
A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Our internal investigation found that a post box in The Square would pose health and safety concerns and cause parking issues for posties collecting from the box.
“Station Road has been ruled to be a safer and more convenient location for a new post box.
“Should any residents need to post a letter and are unable to visit the new post box, they can hand stamped letters to their postie instead.”
Mrs Scrogham said she would still be opposing the decision in the hope that the current plans can still be reconsidered.
She commented: “Despite repeated representations, Royal Mail is maintaining its position that Station Road is the preferred location.
“They have stated that, following internal reviews, they believe The Square raises health and safety concerns and that they are not required to carry out a public consultation.
“This is extremely frustrating, given the clear concerns raised by residents about accessibility and safety at Station Road.”
The Royal Mail previously confirmed that it was aware of the campaign and that this was being taken into consideration, before their latest investigation.
Mrs Scrogham added: “I have made it clear that residents’ lived experience – particularly that of older people and those with mobility difficulties – must be taken seriously.
“I will now be escalating the matter to the Postal Review Panel, the highest level of escalation within Royal Mail, and will continue working with the community to keep this issue live.”
