Passing up passing moves
Long, unbroken sequences of passes in the build-up to goals are rare. A majority of Premier League goals this season (103 out of 198) have been scored with only one pass or none at all before the goalscorer struck. Nearly one-third of goals have featured no passes: in these instances, the last touch before the ball fell to the goalscorer was made by a defender, or the goal was scored from a penalty or free kick, or it was an own goal. Furthermore, touches by defenders that did not significantly alter the ball’s direction during the build-up are not counted as interfering with the attacking team’s passing sequence.
