Gary Janetti claims the royal family was ‘not too pleased’ with his HBO series about Prince George

TV writer Gary Janetti has claimed that the British Royal Family was ‘not too pleased’ with his 2021 animated HBO series The Prince – and why it wasn’t renewed for a second season.

Janetti, who has written for Family Guy, went viral on Instagram a few years ago for his hilarious royal family memes that feature pictures of Prince George, 11, and Prince Louis, 6.

The virality landed him an HBO series, which depicted an eight-year-old Prince George and his life at Buckingham Palace.

The show spoofed the late Queen and King, as well as Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry and Prince William.

Some of the storylines included Markle joining The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and having the wives visit the palace, and the entire family taking a trip to the Caribbean.

However, in a new interview on comedian Matt Friend’s podcast, Friend In High Places, Janetti claimed that the royals were not very happy with his depictions – or the show’s plot, seemingly.

The writer explained that he was approached to create the show right around the time he was thinking of pitching it himself.

‘I did a season at HBO Max, and then I actually wrote the second season because they picked up the scripts for the second season, but we didn’t go forward,’ Janetti claimed.

‘I believe the royal family was not too pleased with the show.’

The Do You Mind If I Cancel? author also explained that another season could have been quite the hassle for everyone involved.

‘They were not happy with it, and I think nobody wanted to deal with the controversy of having displeased the Royal Family,’ he said.

Podcast host Friend then asked if the family was pleased with The Crown – to which Janetti said that they were ‘more pleased’ than his show.

‘I think they were relentless about it, it was a thing,’ Janetti said.

Friend joked that essentially, the Royal Family had ‘canceled’ his show, to which the writer agreed.

But even though the show wasn’t renewed, Janetti admitted it was ‘cool’ that the royals allegedly ‘canceled’ it.

‘I’m from Queens, I grew up in Queens,’ the Will and Grace executive producer said. ‘I know, it’s very meta.’

However, interestingly enough, Janetti revealed in an interview last July that he was never really invested in the royal family.

‘I actually was never interested in the royal family in the slightest,’ Janetti told Us Weekly at the time. ‘I know that seems strange.’

‘It was just, to me, all fictitious. It was just a world that I created based on a personality that I started giving them,’ he continued.

‘It was never something I was interested in at all. Isn’t that weird?’
