Giant surprise in the post for Mellis pupil makes for a magic ending

Not many people can say they have been sent a letter from a giant, but for one Mellis Primary School pupil, that is the end of a beautiful fairytale.

Sophia Nunn has been reading Jack and the Beanstalk as part of her online education during lockdown, with the seven-year-old set the task of writing a letter to the giant in the story.

Having done just that, she posted her letter to Eye Castle – and got a reply from the giant a week later, much to her and her family’s delight.

Sophia said: “I was very surprised to get a letter back from the giant – it made me very happy.”

The reply now has pride of place on her wall at home and her headteacher, Paul Ryle, praised the work of the post man or woman brave enough to venture where few would.

“It has been terrific to see the motivation of our children to carry on with their learning during this difficult time,” he said.

“We would particularly like to thank that unknown person at Royal Mail who risked life and limb to get Sophia’s letter to the giant and to pick up his reply to her.”
