Girl, 10, draws her own stamp on letter to grandparents – and Royal Mail delivers it

A young girl from East Yorkshire was “over the moon” after the Royal Mail delivered loving letters she had written to her grandparents, despite them not being stamped – at least not in the traditional way.

Lily-Mai Lee, 10, decided to write notes to her grandparents, who live in York, to tell them how much she loved them. She popped them in an envelope, addressed them to ‘nana’ and ‘grandad’ and remembered to write their address and postcode on the front.

But instead of using stamps from the post office, Lily-Mai drew on her own, complete with a tiny picture of the King in the corner of the envelope. Unbeknownst to her mum, Leanne, she then posted the letters near her home in Pocklington.

The next day, her grandmother rang Leanne to let her know that she had received the lovely letters. She took pictures of the handwritten notes, which were stamped by the Royal Mail on their way to York.

“Lily-Mai is quite independent and will walk into town with her friends, so it wasn’t out of the ordinary that she went out,” Leanne said. “She came back from the post office looking chuffed with herself, but didn’t say much about what she had done.

“This is probably the first time she has written letters. It was more like little notes inside an envelope where she told her grandparents how much she loved and missed them. I couldn’t believe it when my mum rang me the next day, saying she received the letters.”

Lily-Mai’s letters to her grandparents, with hand-drawn stamps, which were delivered by the Royal Mail.

“Lily-Mai was over the moon when she found out her nana had received them,” Leanne added. “I really didn’t think Royal Mail would process and post them without a stamp.

“It got me the most that Lily-Mai didn’t put on their real names, just ‘nana’ and ‘grandad’, so the postal workers would have known she was a child. It was lovely that they made her day like that.”
