Girl, 8, Angry at Parents Writes Letter To God—6 Months Later Mail Arrives

An 8-year-old girl from Somerset, England, sent a handwritten letter to “God, Cloud 9, Heaven” after being told she could not adopt another dog. More than six months later, a reply arrived in the mail—sparking amazement and confusion in her household, and fascination among viewers online.

“My daughter was delighted,” the girl’s mother, who would prefer to stay anonymous, told Newsweek. “She doesn’t quite understand who wrote the letter but loved the mystery behind it and it’s always nice to have a letter answered.”

The letter and its mysterious reply were first shared on Reddit by the girl’s parent under the username u/normal-ad2587 on October 13. The post, captioned, “who replied to my daughter’s letter to God?” has since received over 7,000 upvotes, drawing thousands of comments and reactions.

“My 8-year-old daughter is dog obsessed,” the parent wrote in the post. “We already have a family dog but she has been asking and asking to re-home another dog from a rescue center. We said no (various reasons) and she got very upset, stormed off to her bedroom and came out an hour later with an envelope.”

According to the post, the girl walked up the road and mailed the envelope. More than half a year later, a typed letter arrived addressed to the child, in a prepaid Royal Mail envelope with no return address or postage markings. The name and address were handwritten.

“Had us totally confused and freaked out for about an hour,” the parent wrote. “Until she realized and revealed that the letter she had written was to God, asking if he could make her dog adoption dreams come true.”

The response read: “Sorry it has taken so long to write back to you, God says he hopes you don’t mind someone else writing back to you who knows him…God has told me to tell you he hears every prayer and answers them at the right time.”

The letter also included encouraging words about the child’s love of dogs, and gently suggested she continue learning about animals and consider working with them one day.

The girl’s mother said she was surprised by the reply but touched by the effort.

“It would also be awesome if the person who wrote the letter read it and knew the importance of their work,” she said. “From the comments I suspect it may have come from a kind soul who presumably works in a Royal Mail sorting depot.

“Apparently, there’s a special department over in Northern Ireland that deals with these sorts of letters and someone who works there has obviously gone above and beyond to make a kid’s day.”

She added that while she was “pretty shocked” at the huge response online, she felt happy that the family’s story touched so many people.

“I think it’s nice in this day and age where everyone is so socially distant that there are still people out there putting the effort in,” she said.
