A ‘gritty’ Glasgow gran is set to climb a Loch Lomond hill this month in celebration of her 80th birthday.
Maureen Kelly will be celebrating her milestone birthday on August 23 with a mighty hill walk in aid of a charity close to her heart – Glasgow’s No.1 Baby & Family Support Service, which is run by her daughter and local councillor Audrey Dempsey.
Maureen is preparing to walk Conic Hill in Balmaha, and despite her age is taking on the challenge with grit and positivity – proving “age is no barrier” says granddaughter Darcie. And is all set with her fresh new walking boots!
Speaking to Glasgow Live, Maureen explained the reason behind the challenge, saying the charity is “struggling for funding”. “My family kept asking what I’d like to do for my birthday but I didn’t want any fuss, and it then struck me that I could do something and raise some money”, said Maureen.
“I thought if we climb Conic Hill that might get a wee bit of money in”.
Maureen will be joined by her daughter Audrey and her granddaughters. The soon-to-be 80-year-old confessed she needs to “practice uphill walking”, but is getting out and about regularly in preparation.
“I feel pretty good about it, definitely”, Maureen added.

Granddaughter Darcie, 25, said: “Gran has always been a woman who gives so much yet never asks for anything in return. This time, we want to ensure her efforts are seen and supported by as many people as possible.”
Glasgow’s No.1 Baby & Family Support Service offers relief of those in need with the distribution of clothing, toys and other goods to families in poverty or in need. And if the service cannot meet the needs of the client they will signpost a suitable service who can, and refer the client on.
Maureen echoed the importance of funding, and urged anyone in need to contact the charity on 0141 378 6864 or at gnonebfss@gmail.com. You can also visit or donate in person at 261 Forge Street, Glasgow.
