Pinchbeck Mothers Union

The meeting was opened by Janet and after prayers especially remembering our members who were unable to attend, speaker Rosemary Sneath was introduced. Rosemary, a trained Norland Nanny gave a resume of her early life and her determined desire to become a nanny from an early age.

She was an ex Gleed girl who trained at the highest level and she had had a number of very interesting and prestigious positions with families “nannying” their children. She brought along her various uniforms from training to final qualification. This was an extremely interesting talk and she was thanked by Susan Hensman-Wright.

After refreshments members were reminded about the next Pop In on November 11 – ring Jane to book(01775769729). George Slinger will be the speaker at the next meeting in the Church Hall at 2pm on November 10. Children’s Society Boxes should be brought to this meeting.

Spalding and District Stamp Club

Chairman Dahlia Harrison welcomed members to the October evening meeting of Spalding & District Stamp Club. As there were no notices so she invited the members to put up their displays on the subject of ‘Anything British’.

Chris Howe showed us a collection of dot matrix stamps. These have recently been introduced by Royal Mail to try and combat fraud. Every stamp is different. As well as individual stamps he showed whole sheets of lower value stamps. Chris said he did not see the point in having matrixes on stamps as they serve no useful purpose and will not help to combat fraud.

Peter Creigh showed a collection of mostly mint commemorative and definitive stamps from George V through to early Elizabeth. Also a display of covers and postcards were shown including a small collection of ‘To Pay’ markings.

Derek Pollard displayed pages from his World War II collection. These were stamps on covers and were from various campaigns and battles including Operation Dynamo, The Battle Of Britain, The Russian Convoys, Operation Chastise, The Great Escape, D-Day, War Anniversaries, Women in World War II, Code Breakers and Operation Manna.

Dahlia Harrison had a display of postcards giving an historic tour of The Parade in Leamington Spa.

Terry Harrison had military mail sent by the Royal Engineers during World War I. He said operation of this mail was originally based at Mount Pleasant but grew to such an extent that a very large purpose-built wooden building was built in Regents Park to handle all the parcels. Mail was sent to soldiers at the front. A lot of mail was returned because soldiers were killed or went missing.

Terry showed a display of covers where mail was returned undelivered.

Peter Hunt showed a variety of Elizabeth commemoratives stamps and presentation packs.

Joyce Boyer gave a display of early postal history from the Spalding area including Penny Post from Donnington.

Roger Taylor showed commemorative stamps from the late 1970s.

Bruce Townshend had stamps from the 1948 Olympic Games including overprinted overseas issues.

These were mostly on first day covers. Also, he showed cigarettes cards from early 20th century related to Royal Mail themes.

Everyone agreed that the material displayed showed what a wide selection of British material members had in their stamp collections.

The next afternoon meeting of the club will be on tomorrow (Wednesday) at 2pm when Angela Cooper from Peterborough Stamp Club will give a display of Sweden stamps. The next evening meeting will be on November 22 at 7.30pm Dahlia Harrison will talk on the subject ‘Fairy Tales to Fantasy’, Meeting are held at The Frasier Room Gosberton Road, Surfleet. Sufleet Ladybird Club

The September meeting of the Ladybirds was the 49th annual meeting. There was a good turnout of members. The current committee was voted unanimously to continue and Sue Morton volunteered to join the committee and was welcomed by everyone.

There were suggestions for speakers and outings and for the Christmas meal in January. It had been suggested that the meal be held at lunchtime, but after much discussion it was decided to keep it in the evening as some of the members work. It was decided not to change the membership and meeting charges, everyone agreed it was good value for money.

Member Olive Fenner had recently celebrated her 90th birthday. The Chairlady presented her with a card and plant from her friends at Ladybirds. It was well received. After the annual meeting everyone enjoyed a delicious Harvest Supper provided by Annette Rhodes, the treasurer.

At the next meeting on Tuesday, November 8, at 7.30pm the speaker will be Derek Harris with a talk about the History of Canals.

At the December meeting Jean Bratley will be giving a masterclass on Christmas Crackers. Each member will make their own to take home afterwards. Please bring a small article to go inside the cracker. Should be entertaining and a lovely evening on the lead up to Christmas.

The club meets in the Fraiser Room, next to the church, on second Tuesday in the month at 7.30pm. Membership is still £3.50 a year and £1 per meeting. Visitors and guests are welcome for a small charge of £1.50. If you have any enquiries about the club contact Chairlady, Hannah Avery on 01775680646 or the Secretary Heather Girdlestone on 01775 821130.
