A £1.35million home dubbed one of the most ’emotionally memorable projects’ to have featured on Grand Designs has been put on the market by a disabled ex-Royal Marine captain.
Jon White, 41, lost both his legs and his right arm from the elbow in 2010 when he stepped on an explosive device while fighting in Afghanistan for the Royal Marines.
After returning to the United Kingdom, Jon and his ex-wife, Becky, 45, sought a home suitable for the ex-Marine captain to live in with his life-changing injures.
The couple decided to purchase a large plot of land in Tiverton, Devon, and set an architect a brief to design a ‘cutting-edge, semi-open plan home that combined bold, contemporary design with subtle, inclusive features for Jon’s disabilities.’
A Grand Design indeed, the home took 14 months to build and was featured on the hit television show in 2013 in an episode which ‘brought viewers to tears’ after hearing Jon’s emotional story.
Now, Jon and Becky, who have two children, 10 and 12, but have since split, have put the home up for sale for a whopping £1.35million – but they insist the house has done ‘all we ever hoped for.’
The property, described as a ‘masterpiece of modern architecture,’ features five spacious bedrooms, four bathrooms, expansive grounds and a spacious open-plan living room amongst a host of other luxuries.
The Halberton home too boasts its own ‘flat’ lived in by Jon following the couple’s break up – but the pair are still friends.
The Halberton, near Tiverton, five-bedroom detached property has been listed for a whopping £1.35million

Speaking to Devon Live about the pair’s decision to sell the property, Becky said: ‘We have now got to the stage where our children are older and we could do with our space. We have loved living here.
‘We can’t advertise Jon’s flat as an annexe as such but it would suit someone who has an old relative living with them or it would also be a good space for a teenager or for someone who has a big, growing family.
‘It also benefits from having a lift, a triple garage and is in a very quiet location. It’s off the road so you wouldn’t even know it’s here.
‘The heating cost and other bills are ridiculously cheap because of its ground-source heat pump, solar panels, triple glazing, insulation and rain water harvest supply. This house is something we have worked hard for and enjoyed and it would be nice to see someone else enjoy it.’
The detached home, named The White House, hit the market three weeks ago and has already garnered a lot of interest.
It also features ‘bespoke interiors, a living hub, spaces for every occasion, exquisite bedrooms and spa inspired bathrooms’ and a lower ground level described as a ‘triumph of thoughtful design.’

The listing reads: ‘A masterpiece of modern architecture, blending innovative design with thoughtful functionality. Nestled within a plot of 0.72 acres, this property is a stunning blend of contemporary innovation and traditional charm.
‘At the heart of the home is a breathtaking open plan lounge, kitchen, and dining space, flooded with natural light from expansive glazing and sliding doors that open onto a glass balcony which in turn offers panoramic views of the lush gardens.
‘The kitchen is a chef’s dream, complete with induction hob, two double ovens, integrated appliances, dual sinks and corian worktops.’
Jon’s favourite part of his soon to be former home is its spacious garden.
‘This house has done all we ever hoped for, especially bringing up the children here,’ he said.
‘One of the best things about it is the garden. During lockdown it was a blessing having so much internal and external space. It just feels the right time.

Jon, who now plans to move closer to the coast, has become a sought after motivational speaker with a ‘hectic life’ in recent years
‘We are all excited about it, and the children like the idea of moving to different places.’
The dad-of-two hasn’t let the life-changing injuries he suffered in Afghanistan stop him from doing what he loves, however.
Jon has since won medals, including gold, while representing Great Britain in marathon kayaking and ocean racing and has too become a sought-after motivational speaker.
The ex-Marine captain now plans to move into a property near the sea in Exmouth, Devon, to make it easier for him to hit the water with his kayak.
‘I don’t need as many adaptations as I first thought after I was injured,’ he said.
‘My life is absolutely hectic as I spend a lot of time travelling with work and also kayaking. Luckily enough I am sponsored to race.’
Jon’s home is being sold through Diamond Estate Agents and can be viewed on Rightmove.
