The Chief Executive of kerbside management company Grid Smarter Cities has joined leaders of the UK’s largest logistics and supply chain businesses in writing to the Secretary of State for Business and Trade calling on him to recognise logistics as a foundational sector in Industry Strategy, and to appoint Logistics UK Chief Executive David Wells OBE to the Industrial Strategy Council.
Neil Herron, (pictured) is among 30 company bosses to sign the Logistics UK letter to Jonathan Reynolds, telling him the case for recognising the logistics sector as foundational is “undeniable”.
The letter argues that the critical supply chains delivered by the logistics sector underpin our whole economy. “Our retail, manufacturing and construction sites, farms and fisheries, and hospitals, schools and homes would not function without them,” the bosses write. “Logistics provides the growth-driving sectors with specialist services that enhance the efficiency of their supply chains, boost their productivity and export their goods to the world.”
They say that, by giving the logistics sector its proper place in the Industrial Strategy and on the Industrial Strategy Council, the Secretary of State would be sending “a strong signal that this government sees strengthening UK supply chains and boosting the country’s productivity as essential levers for driving growth”.
As well as Mr Herron, the letter’s signatories include the CEOs/Managing Directors of Amazon, the Port of Dover, Royal Mail, DHL and Kuehne + Nagel.
