The Duke and Duchess of Sussex revealed their new charity initiative will focus on ‘environment and community’ – a month after they cut ties with the Royal Foundation.

Harry, 34, and Meghan, 37, formally split from their joint venture with the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge last month and will launch their own independent organisation.

Writing on Instagram last night, the couple announced the initiative will be unveiled this autumn and will focus on the ‘environment and community’.

The timing has led some royal watchers to speculate that the launch will be timed to coincide with the Sussexes’ visit to Africa this autumn.

Following their joint appearance at the Lion King premiere in London last night, Harry and Meghan took to Instagram to reveal Disney had already made a contribution to their new initiative.

‘In celebration of the film’s release, The Walt Disney Company announced #ProtectThePride, a global conservation campaign to support efforts protecting the rapidly diminishing lion population across Africa,’ reads the post on the official Sussex Royal account.

‘As a part of their commitment to this cause, Disney also made a donation to The Duke of Sussex’s upcoming environment & community initiative which will be formally announced this autumn.’

The details come days after the Daily Mail’s Richard Eden revealed Harry and Meghan have trademarked The Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

He also told how the couple are taking one of the Royal Foundation’s most distinguished directors with them to run their new power base.

The Royal Foundation was established by Prince Harry and Prince William in 2009.

The Duchess of Cambridge joined as patron after her 2011 marriage and was later followed by the Duchess of Sussex.

William, Kate, Harry and Meghan’s joint Royal Foundation venture was intended to harness the star power of the four high-profile royals, but it lasted just 16 months.

While working with the Royal Foundation, Meghan took on her first charitable project, Meghan’s Hubb Community cookbook, which raised money for those impacted by the tragedy at Grenfell Tower.

The Sussexes’ split from the Foundation is part of a wider division of the two royal households.

The change is aimed at setting the couples on ‘a path that is sustainable for the future’.

William is a future monarch and Kate a future Queen consort, while Harry is sixth in line to throne.
