Helen Flanagan faces backlash over Royal Ascot outfit as fans left ‘disappointed’

Helen said she felt ‘super elegant’ as she sported a white Karen Millen dress at Royal Ascot this week but fans were not happy

Helen Flanagan has responded to backlash on her latest social media post from Royal Ascot. The former Coronation Street star attended the lavish racing event on Tuesday sporting a white dress by Karen Millen, and fans were not happy with her sartorial choice.

Millen hit headlines last week after she made some controversial comments about breastfeeding on Vanessa Feltz’s Channel 5 talk show. The designer, 63, caused outrage when she said breastfeeding an infant after six months is “selfish”, and was later forced to apologise.

Helen shared an image of her soaking up the atmosphere at Ascot, and revealed she was feeling “super elegant” and “sophisticated”.

She penned: “Race day ready in Karen Millen. I love getting dressed up! Feeling super elegant and sophisticated in this look. This dress is perfect for all year round, cocktail dressing. Love the mix of the light and breezy skirt, while more structured and fitted on top. I went for white but the dress also comes in blue and mulberry.”

However, the star soon faced her own backlash with the outfit reveal. Helen, who shares kids – Matilda, nine, Delilah, six, and Charlie, four – with former Celtic star Scott Sinclair, regularly updated fans about her own three breastfeeding journeys.

She received comments about her choice of designer as one fan penned: “Little bit disappointed in your choice of designer after her controversial breastfeeding comments but you do look beautiful.”

Helen didn’t hold back in replying as she said: “Hi Emma! Appreciate your feedback. I breastfed my children across a period of three years and was always very passionate and vocal about my experience with breastfeeding and also supportive as to how all parents choose to feed their babies.

“Karen Millen, who made the comments, isn’t actually involved with the fashion brand Karen Millen anymore. I did seek reassurance before making this post and was confident in the statement they put out, that the comments made did not reflect the views and values of the brand. I would have thought very differently, had they not. Hope this clears that up.”

Karen Millen sold her brand back in 2004 and hasn’t designed for the company for many years. Following her comments on Vanessa’s show, she issued a public apology.

Vanessa said: “Karen has faced some backlash for what she said yesterday on the show and some social media clips, too, have been quite antagonistic. And she’s now said she’d like to apologise and she’s given us this exclusive statement.”

The video then cut to footage of Karen, who addressed the issue to the camera, as she said: “I know I’ve upset a lot of your viewers and that was not my intention. The question was aimed at a three-year-old being breastfed and my thoughts on that and my answers reflected that, not the subject of breastfeeding.

“I have three children and I breastfed all three of them up until six, seven months. Despite it being incredibly painful, I got mastitis each time and cracked and sore nipples. But I did it because I knew it was the best thing for them for at least six months. So, you know, I think my issue was more on the fact that, you know, as a baby breast milk is the best.
