Henley Regatta 2022: dress code, parking and everything you need to know

Henley Regatta is back for six action-packed days of racing.

The event is undoubtedly the best-know regatta in the world and is often seen as a highlight of both the summer sporting calendar and social season.

Henley Regatta 2022 marks the 183rd year of the event, with a record 419 crews qualified from 17 nations (including Great Britain).

The crews are from every level of elite rowing – including school, university, club and country – and will compete in 393 head-to-head knockout races across 26 events during the regatta.

Sir Steve Redgrave, Chairman of the Committee of Management, said: “The Stewards of Henley Royal Regatta are looking forward to the start of this Regatta as much as it seems the rest of the rowing has been. 

“Once it was clear we would be able to stage this scale of event, the level of expectation has been building. But the response from our crews, both domestic and international, our Members and Volunteers, and all who come to support the event has still been as breath-taking as I’m sure the racing will be from Tuesday morning until Sunday afternoon.”

This is everything you need to know about Henley Regatta 2022:

Where is Henley Regatta?

The regatta will take place on the River Thames in Henley-on-Thames.

When does Henley Regatta start?

The regatta officially kicked off today (June 28) and will run until Sunday (July 3).

The provisional timetables:

  • Tuesday – racing starts at 09:30 – the Enclosures open at 09:00
  • Wednesday – racing starts at 09:00 – the Enclosures open at 08:30
  • Thursday – racing starts at 09:30 – the Enclosures open at 09:00
  • Friday – racing starts at 09:30 – the Enclosures open at 09:00
  • Saturday – racing starts at 10:00 – the Enclosures open at 09:30
  • Sunday – racing starts at 11:00 – the Enclosures open at 10:00

The racing is expected to finish at around 19:50 each day, except on Sunday when the last race will be at 16:30.

The Prizegiving Ceremony takes place from the Fawley Stand within the Stewards’ Enclosure from 17:00 on Sunday, 3 July.

What enclosures are there?

Stewards’ Enclosure

A spokesperson for Henley Regatta said: “The Stewards’ Enclosure is situated on the Berkshire bank directly opposite the Finish Line and offers the ultimate vantage point to experience the competition. It is home to two Grandstands, a Prize Tent & Art Gallery, an array of bars & restaurants, and prime riverside seating to catch all of the racing action.

“This Enclosure is open to Members and their Guests, including children from the age of ten. A Stewards’ Enclosure Badge also allows access to the Regatta Enclosure.”

Regatta Enclosure

A spokesperson for Henley Regatta said: “Situated on the Berkshire bank, just downstream from the Stewards’ Enclosure, the Regatta Enclosure is open to the general public and is the ideal place from where families and supporters can watch the racing – including children of all ages.

“The Regatta Enclosure features riverside seating and an open Grandstand, as well as a covered restaurant – offering both formal & informal dining – and bar to kick back and relax with friends.”

What is the dress code?

The dress code in the Stewards’ Enclosure is:

There is no dress code in the Regatta Enclosure for the general public. However, people often tend to get in the mood and dress up for the event.

In the Stewards’ Enclosure there is a dress code.

Ladies:

Ladies are required to wear dresses or skirts with a hemline below the knee, or jackets or blazers with trousers, or trouser suits.

Whilst not a requirement, it is customary for ladies to wear hats.

No shorts, leggings, tracksuits or jeans.

Gentleman:

Gentlemen are required to wear lounge suits, or jackets or blazers with trousers, together with a tie or, if preferred, a cravat.

No shorts, leggings, tracksuits or jeans.

Where can I park?

Daily parking is available on the regatta site during the event.

Car Parks are open daily from 07:30 to 21:00 – overnight parking is not permitted and the gates will be locked at 21:00.

A one-way system operates in Henley-on-Thames town centre during the event.

Depending on what time you arrive and leave site, there is a different route in and out of the event.
