‘His Royal Highness is grateful’ The brilliant Aston Villa letter Prince William has sent us

This is what you call the Royal seal of approval for Aston Villa ‘s promotion heroics.

A couple of weeks ago we published a bumper souvenir special ‘Back Where We Belong’ – to celebrate Villa’s return to the Premier League.

It was something we wanted to share with every claret and blue fanatic, even the ones in the highest places!

With that we dispatched a copy to HRH Prince William so he too could enjoy our bumper celebration special.

And enjoy it he did, we even got a letter back!

Sadly, we are all out of copies now, but if you still wanted to enjoy the special, we have an online edition – here

We also sent a copy to Tom Hanks, if you are reading Tom, You’ve Got Mail, check The Post.

He’s yet to reply, but we have Big hopes he will enjoy our Splash.

Speaking of Mr Hanks. He recently revealed the full story behind why he supports Villa.

The American movie star has long been one of Villa’s most celebrated supporters.

Now the truth has emerged… after Hanks confessed that he chose Aston Villa – because he thought it was an idyllic SEASIDE TOWN!

Appearing on James Corden’s Late Late Show, the 62-year-old movie icon spilled the beans.

“We take football very seriously here, and you’re a fan of quite an obscure team,” the cheeky chat show host suggested.

But Hanks was having none of it.

“I don’t think Aston Villa is an obscure team whatsoever, the claret and the blue,” he thundered.

“But here’s what happened. The very first time I came to the UK, I was a young man and I experienced jet lag.

“So I sprung out of bed on my first morning in London, threw the drapes open and looked out.

“It was June. What a beautiful day in London! Where is everybody?

“There was not a soul in the park, on the street.

“I realised then that it was ten minutes after five in the morning because the sun was getting up.

“There was nothing to do except turn on the BBC and catch the football scores.”

It was a fateful decision, upon which his famous football support would be founded.

It was a fateful decision

“I didn’t understand where any of these towns were,” he admitted.

“These clubs who were Swansea 6, Stoke City 0; Blackfoot 5 Tottenham on Twixby 3…

“I didn’t know where any of these teams were. Then one came on and said ‘Aston Villa 2….’

“And I thought ‘Aston Villa’, what a lovely vacation spot! Aston Villa…

“It’s beautiful villa, you throw open the French doors, there’s the beautiful port of Aston down below you.

“And it turns out it’s in Birmingham. There’s nothing wrong with that, nothing wrong with Birmingham.

“But it’s not a town for light-hearted, I tell you that.

“So I’m a dedicated Aston Villa fan since then. I’ve seen them play once, a friendly in the USA, so yes, I support them.”

Suitably chastened, Cordon replied: “Well, the future King of England, Prince William, is also an Aston Villa fan ….”

“Not only is the future King of England an Aston Villa fan,” said Hanks. “But Aston Villa fans will soon, in the future, be holding up the FA Cup all unto their own.”

As Cordon countered “It might be quite a long way into the future”, Hanks cut him off, yelling “Aww shut up! UP THE VILLA!”

There were wild cheers in the audience, suggesting the superstar wasn’t alone in his love of all things Villa Park.

Cordon has been presenting his US chat show all this week from London’s Central Hall.
