Homeless man convicted for pushing postman onto tube tracks

The video captures the moment a homeless man pushed a postman onto the Tube tracks at Oxford Circus station because he thought he had been given a “dirty look”, Kazinform News Agency correspondent reports.

Brwa Shorsh, 24, was sleeping on a bench on the Victoria line platform when he suddenly leapt up and shoved Tadeusz Potoczek, 61 off the platform. Mr. Potoczek, wearing his distinctive red Royal Mail uniform, managed to clamber back onto the platform with the help of quick-thinking members of the public, just as a train entered the station.

Shorsh, a Kurdish migrant, admitted to shoving Mr. Potoczek but denied attempted murder, insisting he had not intended to harm him. However, on Wednesday, Shorsh was found guilty of attempted murder and will be sentenced.

The incident occurred when Mr. Potoczek was making his way home from work. Prosecutor Sam Barker described the event as “the stuff of nightmares” and “a case of shocking and random violence.”

When arrested, Shorsh told police he was “angry” after believing three women on a passing train had been rude to him. He claimed he acted because he felt disrespected by Mr. Potoczek’s alleged dirty look.

Mr. Potoczek managed to stay on his feet and away from the live rails. To his horror, a train was coming into the station. Thanks to his quick thinking and the assistance of a passerby, he was pulled back onto the platform. The train driver applied the emergency brake, stopping just four seconds away from hitting Mr. Potoczek.

Shorsh was found guilty by a jury after 32 minutes of deliberations and will be sentenced on 26 September.
