How to get a free TV licence as price hike set to come in next month

Streaming services have dramatically changed the television market in the past decade with the rise in popularity of Netflix and Prime video, the introduction of Disney+ and YouTube now available on most TVs. But while steaming shows has become the preferred way of viewing incredible shows, people do still like to watch mainstream TV.

So on top of all the streaming service subscriptions, households across the country are also paying for a TV licence which is set to go up in price from April 1. The fee which used to cost £159 annually will now cost £10 more at a price of £169.50.

But the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions) has recently reminded people that they could be eligible for a free TV licence.

If you are over 75 and are still paying for your TV licence then you could be paying when you don’t need to. An update on X, formerly known as Twitter, the DWP stated: “#PensionCredit could give access to extra support, including help with energy costs and a free TV Licence for over 75s”.

But the benefits of Pension Credit don’t stop at a free TV licence, over 75s can also benefit from other ‘freebies’ and money saving schemes. These include:

  • Housing Benefit if you rent the property you live in.

  • Support for Mortgage interest if you own the property you live in.

  • Council Tax discount.

  • Help with NHS dental treatment, glasses and transport costs for hospital appointments.

  • Help with your heating costs through the Warm Home Discount Scheme.

  • A discount on Royal Mail redirection service if you are moving house.

While the benefit is easy to get and is worth £75 per week for each claimant, it is believed that around 850,000 people living in the UK who are eligible don’t actually claim it.
