Huge 999 response called to Birmingham ‘egg and flour fight’ mistaken for ‘hazmat incident’

Emergency crews were scrambled to Muntz Street in Small Heath with fears of ‘hazardous materials’ but it turned out to be an ‘egg and flour fight’ and no one was ‘battered’

A big emergency services response was called to Birmingham in what was believed to be a ‘hazmat’ incident but turned out to be an ‘egg and flour fight’.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were scrambled to Muntz Street in Small Heath on Friday (November 21) night.

The emergency responders were alerted to what was initially believed to be a ‘hazardous materials’ related incident in the road, which sits off Coventry Road and includes Small Heath Library.

A video shows ambulances, and a fire engine in the area, with police tape cordoning off the pavement near the road’s junction with Wright Street.

The ambulance service sent three ambulances and an experienced paramedic officer to the scene.

There they treated three children, one was taken to hospital.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Ambulance Service said: “We were called to an incident on Muntz Street in Birmingham at 7.36pm on Friday and sent three ambulances and a paramedic officer to the scene.

“On arrival, crews found three teenage patients requiring assessment.

“A girl was treated for minor injuries and conveyed to Heartlands Hospital whilst a second girl and a boy were assessed and discharged at the scene.”

A spokesman for West Midlands Fire Service confirmed it initially received a call to a possible hazardous materials incident.

He said: “The call originally came in as a hazmat incident,

“We sent two crews initially from Hay Mills and Highgate.

“It turned out to be a false alarm and they were not there long.”

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “It was an egg and flour fight and not a police matter.”
