Hull Royal’s security guard gets the recognition he truly deserves after amazing response to crisis

For Josh Woolhouse, dealing with members of the public passing through Hull Royal Infirmary is just another day on the job.

But for some of those passing through and meeting him, he is a hero – and this isn’t more true than when it comes to one of his very own colleagues.

Josh, 24, from Bilton Grange, has worked at Hull Royal for a security company for five years after being medically discharged from the army and there are many reasons why he has been nominated for a Hull Daily Mail Health and Care Award.

The Unsung Health Hero Award is sponsored by Hull College and looks for the person working outside the health service or public sector who shows real dedication and compassion in care, bringing about real change or ensuring others come first.

And Josh is prime example of that, with one of his actions in helping save his fellow colleague, Shaun, a porter at HRI, highlighting that to the extreme.

Josh said: “I was walking down the stairs and a member of staff collapsed in front of me.

“I put him in the recovery position as normal then, as I was checking, I realised he didn’t have a pulse and I put a crash call out and started chest compressions until the doctors and nurses came.

“Luckily, he survived. The best part of my job is helping everyone and being there when people need you. I really enjoy my job.”

Josh has a lot to deal with, as hospital staff are sometimes not treated very nicely and he says he has been sworn at, spat at and assaulted.

Despite that, he always has a smile on his face and is there when he is needed.

He said he was delighted to have been nominated.

He said: “It’s a nice feeling to be nominated. It’s always nice to be noticed for things you’ve done.

“I’m sub-contracted by OCS and am one of two officers that patrol the hospital. We patrol the outside of the hospital and the inside and we attend any incidents we’re needed at – they’re always different.

“I keep myself busy and make sure everyone is ok.”
