Hundreds of banking hubs set to open in UK – full list of 76 open now

A large number of banking hubs are set to open up across the country as more traditional bank branches shut. According to ATM network LINK, 215 branches are expected to close by August 2015.

It comes as major banks in the UK move towards catering more to online services despite the sustained need for face-to-face services for some groups in the UK, including seniors. However, banking hubs provide ease of access to face-to-face banking by allowing customers to use most of the necessary services they need from different banks.

Hubs are run by the Post Office and allow customers to cash in cheques, withdraw cash, check their balance, and pay their utility bills. Some of the country’s largest banks have confirmed they will set up at least 350 bank hubs across a five-year period in a new deal with the Treasury.

Meanwhile, 230 of these hubs are expected to be open to customers by the end of 2025 while 120 will be established by the end of the parliamentary term. City minister Tulip Siddiq said: “Banking hubs are a lifeline for local communities that have lost their final bank branch. I’m confident that the banks will deliver on the commitment made today, as well as take a more active approach to meeting the needs of local communities.”

Currently, there are 76 banking hubs operating across the country. ATM network LINK and Cash Access UK have indicated plan to get 100 banking hubs operating by the end of the year.

Some places may also see temporary hubs open up in their local area before a more permanent location is established. Lisa McGreevy, Project Manager for Cash Access UK, added: “The temporary hub is a provision we provide prior to the permanent hub, as the agreements for these can take some time.

“By providing a temporary hub, we can ensure that the community has access to their banking requirements in a much shorter timeframe. This will then remain open until the permanent hub opens.”
