Hundreds of Royal Mail customers were left unable to find their parcels as the postal firm’s online tracking system stopped working yesterday.

Around 81 per cent of user reports on DownDetector said the online service which allows users to track the status of their deliveries was down yesterday.

The Royal Mail’s website told customers of the issues, saying: ‘We’re sorry our service is temporarily unavailable. We are working on fixing the problem.’

And on X, formerly Twitter, the Royal Mail Help account posted at 12.45pm yesterday: ‘We’re currently unable to track items for you either online or on the phone due to a system issue. Deliveries are taking place as normal.

‘We’re looking into this and will get it fixed as soon as possible. Sorry for any inconvenience caused.’

DownDetector reports remained high until yesterday evening, peaking at more than 600 at around 11am, but the service now appears to be back online this morning.

One report from around 6.45pm yesterday said: ‘Had a package worth close to £500 collected today. Received no proof of postage email and I’m unable to track the package. Hopefully it shows up at its destination tomorrow.’

Fuming customers posted on social media about the down service, with Ian Jeffray writing: ‘So @RoyalMail tracking has been down all day. 2018 says the page. I guess this is what you get for not maintaining your system for 5 years eh?’

Another user wrote: ‘Can anyone working for Royal Mail let us know if they are doing anything to fix the tracking issues?

‘Like have they tried turning it off and on again? How bad can the issue be?!’

A Royal Mail spokesperson said yesterday: ‘We are sorry our online service is temporarily unavailable.

‘Our technical teams are aware of the issue, resolutions are in place, and we are working to return to our usual service as soon as possible.

‘Please be reassured that this is a technical issue and will not affect an item’s delivery. We apologise for any inconvenience.’

A spokesperson confirmed today that the service has resumed.
