Hundreds of Royal Oak protesters gather for ‘Save the Post Office’ rally

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WXYZ) — Protesters took to the streets Saturday across the country to demand post offices stay open.

The postmaster general, a Trump appointee, has been criticized for policy changes that caused mail delays.

Hundreds rallied calling for adequate funding to support normal operations, and they made sure their voices were heard.

At least 200 demonstrators rallied outside Royal Oaks’ post office, joining a day of nationwide protest in what’s being called “Save the Post Office Saturday.”

“When I saw Trump on TV bragging that he was withholding funds, I was absolutely furious,” said one protester.

The growing frustration is at a boiling point, as Congress works to get a stimulus bill to include funding for the post office operations across the country.

The Postmaster General Louis DeJoy confirmed policy changes some that included eliminating mail and sorting machines will cease until after the election.

DeJoy has been on the hot seat testifying in front of lawmakers in Washington this week.

He also eliminated overtime which also caused delays.

Some voters have concerns that the backlog caused by changes to the service could have an impact on their absentee ballot cast come November.

Ava Campbell is too young to vote but came to the protest with her mother. She says there’s an awakening among her generation.

“Even though I am underage I can still make a difference with my voice,” said Ava. “I know that people my age and in my personal group of friends care about what’s going on.”

In the meantime, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are telling constituents to return their ballots in the mail early.

“Two things you have to do is raise hell and get out and vote.”

The U.S Postal Service launched a new election mail website to help voters find information on requesting absentee ballots and deadlines.
