‘I don’t think we should blame the Princess at all’: Royal expert warns Palace aides advising Kate and William over photoshop fiasco are ‘not up to the job’ in latest episode of YouTube talk show The Reaction

An eminent Royal Historian has condemned palace aides advising the Prince and Princess of Wales in the aftermath of the embarrassment caused by their Mother’s Day photograph.

Tom Bower told The Reaction the private secretaries, who give the monarchy strategic guidance on preventing a crisis, are all ‘Yes men’ failing the family.

He told hosts Sarah Vine and Andrew Pierce the Royals are ‘sliding into crisis’ because of ‘an erosion of good advice’.

Mr Bower’s strong warning to the Royal Family comes after a ‘tumultuous’ week, which saw Princess Kate apologise for a photoshopped picture of her released on Mothering Sunday.

Ms Vine shared her own concerns: ‘It is just ironic that a picture that was designed to quash all the mad conspiracy has made it much worse.

‘There is another weird thing about the picture which is she is not wearing her wedding ring.’

Mr Pierce agreed adding, ‘her hands could have been obscured quite easily.’

Prince William took the picture of his wife with their children, but Kate was forced to admit she photoshopped the image, when international photo agencies issued a kill order.

They did so because they could tell it was edited and therefore breached rules around what can be officially used.

But the author of ‘Revenge: Meghan, Harry, and the war between the Windsors’ argued Kate was let down by her aides and ‘should not be blamed at all’.

Mr Bower said the shoot was meant to end the rumours about Kate’s health after her abdominal surgery in January.

Along with the King’s cancer diagnosis there are fears the monarchy is at its weakest in years with so few acting Royals.

Mr Bower said: ‘I do not think we should blame the Princess at all.

‘She is recovering from a serious operation, and I think she was pressured into doing this photoshoot because people thought that would stop the dreadful ghouls on the social media.

‘The private secretaries both in Kensington Palace and Buckingham Palace are just not up to the job.

‘I think altogether what we are seeing is the erosion of good advice because the King himself has always only wanted to be advised by ‘yes men’.

‘I fear that Prince William is also going the same way.

‘William seems to like weak people in his court and that cannot continue. We are dealing with a Royal crisis of people; they are ill, they are old, and there are very few of them.

‘They should have got a professional Press Association photographer in and that would have been the end of it.’

Speaking about the missing wedding ring, Ms Vine added: ‘Whoever is advising them is not doing their job, because if I were advising them, I would have said this a lovely photograph of you and your children, but you are not wearing your wedding ring.

‘Are you sure that is what you want to put out there?

‘I actually feel very sorry for the Princess of Wales…. the problem is the way the whole thing has been handled has just made it much worse and now there is a layer of distrust which is creeping in.’

Also debated on this week’s episode is the news that Boris Johnson might make some appearances on the campaign trail as Rishi Sunak attempts to prevent electoral wipeout.

The Reaction is released every Wednesday and is available on the Daily Mail’s YouTube channel.
