I Wrote a Letter to Meghan Markle and This Is What She Sent Back

Truth be told, I did it on a whim: After writing an article about the best address for sending snail mail to Meghan Markle, I had to put my own instructions to the test. So, back in March—before the world met baby Archie—I got out my finest piece of Rifle Paper Co. stationery and hand wrote (in cursive!) the Duke and Duchess of Sussex a note.

What did I say? I mainly sent good wishes about the upcoming arrival of their royal babe. I also sprinkled in a bit of parenting advice—about the importance of regular date nights and how they should do what they can to prioritize sleep. (Hey, they may have a full staff to help, but they’re still human, right?)

Fast forward to JULY—a cool three months after I stuck my note in the mail—and you can only imagine my surprise to see a very regal-looking piece of correspondence from Kensington Palace surface amongst the bills.

The return address said simply, “Kensington Palace,” while the postage made it clear where it came from as the envelope was marked, “Royal Mail.”

I shrieked. Then, realizing I no longer own a letter opener, I relied on my husband to steam open the envelope—God forbid I introduce a rip or tear.

What was inside was thoughtful and succinct. A pic of Prince Harry and Markle at their first official photo call with Archie came with a printed note on the back: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex greatly appreciate you taking the time to write and celebrate the birth of Archie Mountbatten-Windsor. Their Royal Highnesses have been incredibly touched by all of the warm wishes they have received during this especially joyful time in their lives. They send their best wishes and heartfelt thanks.”

Was the royal photo—a glossy color printout—a wee bit blurry as if printed at home? Yes. Did it floor my royal-loving soul that Meghan Markle—OK, OK, someone on her correspondence team—took the time to send a reply to my handwritten note? Absolutely.
