Ikea launches new charge for online orders for first time – and shoppers are fuming

IKEA is now charging for its Click and Collect service from stores – and the change won’t go down well with shoppers.

Customers must pay £2 when they order an item online to collect from a branch, although the service remains free to members of its Family loyalty scheme.

The change was spotted by one annoyed shopper, who posted online: “Since when have you started charging for using click and collect?!

“I get there is a business cost but really come on.”

Ikea said the fee for non-members has been brought in to make its delivery and collection services “financially sustainable”.

Ikea offers a range of collection options, in addition to its delivery service, including in-store collections and pick-ups from selected Tesco car parks, DPD or locker pick-up points.

The company says Ikea Family members can get free collections across all its Click and Collect options, although they will need to spend over a certain amount to qualify.

For example, members must spend more than £100 to collect from a Tesco site, more than £60 from a DPD point (based in convenience stores or post offices) and more than £100 from a Locker.

The regular fees for collection from different points are between £2 and £5.

Joining the Ikea Family club means you can collect points for rewards, such as saving on delivery or meals, get discounts on certain products and get a higher buyback value on old products. Users must set up an online account at ikea.com to benefit.

The company said: “We believe in transparent pricing and continue to invest in our services to expand our delivery options and click and collect locations to provide increased choice and convenience for our customers.

“To make our delivery and collection services financially sustainable, Click and Collect has seen the introduction of a £2 fee for non-IKEA Family members.

“IKEA Family, which is free to join, offers members free collection across all Click and Collect options, including in-store collections, at mobile pick-up points from Tesco car parks or DPD and locker pick-up points.”

It’s the latest company to provoke anger by charging more for delivery, click and collect or collection services.

Morrisons recently introduced a £3 fee to customers who order a basket of £40 or under to be delivered to their home.

How much supermarkets charge for click and collect delivery

HERE’S how much the major supermarkets charge for click and collect grocery deliveries:

  • Asda: Click and collect is free for next day or later deliveries. But you must spend at least £25, if not there’s a £4 charge.
  • Morrisons: Click and collect is free all day Monday to Thursday, from 12pm to 4pm on Fridays and Sundays, and from 2pm to 4pm on Saturdays.
  • Sainsbury’s: Click and collect is free for next day or later deliveries. But you must spend at least £40, if not there’s a £4 charge.
  • Tesco: Click and collect costs £1.50 if you spend at least £25, if not you’ll be charged an extra £4 on top.

Meanwhile Royal Mail this year introduced a 30p charge for home collection after years of offering a free service.

More Ikea news

It comes after the Swedish brand closed its Plan and Order point at the Stockport Merseyway Shopping Centre on June 16.

The store in Greater Manchester is a smaller outlet than its usual out-of-town locations and is focused on kitchen, bedroom and living room planning.

The aim was to provide somewhere for customers to go to get advice and expertise on home furnishing and somewhere where they could design their ideal fittings and get individual 3D interior plans from the interior designers.

According to IKEA, the decision to close the store permanently was made due to “a result of valuable learnings” where the company recognised their customers wanted a different retail experience, more along the lines of Click and Collect and return services.

But it is not all bad news, as the brand has opened a new store in Brighton’s Churchill Square Shopping Centre.

The store takes over the former Debenhams site which has been empty since 2021.

Brighton IKEA is third city-centre store in the UK, following Oxford Street and Hammersmith in London.
