The phenomenon in Chorley dates back 20 years
Come rain or snow there doesn’t seem to be any weather which deters posties from wearing shorts.
There are practical reasons why postmen and woman might prefer wearing shorts.
In the summer it helps them to keep cool while in the rain it can become extremely uncomfortable walking round in wet trousers with one Chorley postman saying “skin is waterproof!”.
However, as well as the comfort aspect, the postman, while on his round in the village of Heskin, explained that the phenomenon locally actually started more than two decades ago.
“It all started out as a fundraising idea really,” he said.
“It was us in Chorley versus Wigan posties and we said we’d see who could wear shorts for the longest.
“At the end of it we raised about £5,000 and the money was split between two charities and we chose Derian House, the children’s hospice, in Chorley.
“It’s just stuck I guess!”
However, there are some occasions when posties prefer to wear long trousers, as one explained in a post on Reddit earlier this year: “One round I cover, I wear trousers just because of the wind.
“I made the mistake once and had windburn all up my legs, but that particular village happens to be the highest point of the town and is a massive wind tunnel.
“All other rounds I’m in shorts pretty much all year.”
