In the dock: Defendants sentenced in Southampton in August

From attacking a wheelie bin with a knife to owning dangerous dogs, defendants have been dealt with for a range of crimes in the last month. 

Below is a round-up of some of Southampton’s biggest sentencings over the last month:

Stephen Moroney

Described as a “troubled” man in court, Moroney, 68, was at home when his dog Nala attacked a labourer. 

The man who had been hired to do work in the garden of Moroney’s Summertrees Court property was bitten on the elbow as he tried to run. 

But when a police officer came to inspect Nala, a Dogue De Bordeaux, he was also bitten and required hospital treatment.

Phillip Cornock

Former pub manager Phillip Cornock started talking to what he thought was a 14-year-old boy on an app called Romeo.

But after the conversation was moved to Whatsapp, it became more sexualised, leading to 34-year-old Cornock sending a link to his own profile on PornHub. 

He was confronted at his Denzil Avenue home by a group of vigilantes who used his phone number to find his address on PayPal.

Stefan-Alexandru Bloj

Royal Mail lorry driver Stefan-Alexandru Bloj had nodded off at the wheel when his 44-tonne lorry ploughed into stationary vehicles at Redbridge roundabout. 

A jury heard how the 34-year-old was on his first ever night shift and having slept just three hours beforehand, nodded off for five seconds. 

Grandfather David Sullivan was killed in the crash when his Citreon was sent flying into the air by the impact.

David Bull

Bull, 40, had been involved in an argument in the street when he went into his home and picked up what was described as a “nine-inch carving knife”. 

He then came out of the property, still angry after the argument, and stabbed a wheelie bin with the blade. 

Recorder Don Tait told the defendant “this sort of conduct cannot be tolerated”.

Kyle McGailey

An emotional McGailey sat in the dock as the court was told how he had thrown his partner’s cat down the stairs. 

The 24-year-old used a baseball bat to get Nala out from under a sofa before picking her up, at which point she urinated on the sofa. 

He then stormed up the stairs and threw her over the bannister, leaving her motionless and floppy on the floor.

Sophie Louise Carter

Police went to 39-year-old Carter’s Lee-on-the-Solent address after receiving information about the potential distribution of images. 

After wrestling with the tree surgeon in order to get her phone, officers discovered a number of indecent images of children. 

Carter was prosecuted under the name Dominic Carter but the court was told at sentencing that she now goes by the name Sophie Louise and identifies as a woman.
