Index and Queens Arcade : Nuneaton town centre shops in the 80s, 90s and 00s we miss

Work is about to start on the new Hilton hotel in Nuneaton as part of a new regeneration scheme. The Transforming Nuneaton project aims to make the town centre a place to visit, work and also live and will include work on the roads, including the notorious ring road, to make it easier for people – from residents to visitors and workers – to access the town centre.

The project is likely to see major changes to Abbey Street, including the new hotel, most buildings in New Century Way flattened, a new £4m training centre and restaurant in the old Co-op, a new health centre and the the former Woolworths store been transformed into office space. Again, this space is also ready to welcome its first tenants.

I, Transforming Nuneaton will see The town library, Powell House and the buildings currently occupied by Wilkos and the Royal Mail in Vicarage Street and Church Street will also be flattened flattened to make way for a new £20m business quarter, and there are plans to demolish shops in nearby Bridge Street.
