Tom Wagner announced the plan to build an underground tunnel from New Street station to the club’s planned new stadium in Bordesley Green.
The tunnel is part of his ‘dream’ to create a £3-billion sports mecca in the heart of deprived East Birmingham. He is due to meet government officials to ask for backing for the £20 million plan. The American hedge fund executive co-owns the club with NFL legend Tom Brady.
He revealed the plans at a summit hosted by Insider Media in the West Midlands. He said he now needs local voices to back his idea, so it’s not just down to ‘the crazy American’.
Other options were considered with a subway, but the 1.5 miles tunnel was deemed the best option using electric buses with a cost of around £20m, running underneath the existing rail lines.
